Personal Health, Public Health

Our strategy 2012-2016.

We spent the final third of our money on our sexual health services.

With continuing high levels of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies the need for THT’s sexual health services has never been greater.

During 2010/11 THT’s Chlamydia screening programmes screened nearly 100,000 people for Chlamydia, more than any other organisation in the UK. These are all young people, many of whom have a range of sexual health needs. For many, it may be the first time they have used a health service independently of their parents.

Of those young people who used our screening services, we helped diagnose 4.8% of them with Chlamydia, and ensured that they got treatment.

This means that there are thousands of young people who have been diagnosed and treated for Chlamydia who otherwise may not have been. Many of those would have been at risk of developing complications such as infertility or pelvic inflammatory diseases.

We helped those young people to notify their partners and helped reduce ongoing transmission of Chlamydia.

In addition to the work of our Health Promotion team, our Counselling team was behind Talksafe, a service which offers young people a wide range of health information and introduces them to our counselling services. The Talksafe website, which launched in April 2010, was visited by 3,300 young people by March 2011.

More generally THT’s Community Sexual health services provided contraception, sexually transmitted infection testing and sexual health advice for more than 2000 people.
