5 Our Fathers And 2 Hail Marys, 2017
Anna Mazzotta, one of the youngest winners of the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize, was raised in the Italian Catholic tradition. Born ‘guilty’, she gives a humorous and quirky view of how priests and nuns are human too.
The beauty of being Catholic, according to Mazzotta, is that you know you will be forgiven your sins when you confess - probably with five Our Fathers and two Hail Marys given as penance.
Painting primarily from her imagination, a technique that gives her art a far more personal feeling, Mazzotta is heavily influenced by Art Deco, theatre, beach scenes and cinema. She has a deep love for silent movies and the way exaggerated expressions are used to tell a story.
