Antony Gormley

Body LXIV, 2016

Antony Gormley figure

One of Britain’s best-loved artists, Antony Gormley won the Turner Prize in 1994 and has been a member of the Royal Academy since 2003.

He has had major exhibitions at renowned spaces all over the world and is currently exhibiting Object - a life-size sculpture cast from a mould of his own body - at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Major public works include Event Horizon (London, New York, São Paulo and other major cities), the Angel of the North (Gateshead, England) and Another Place (Crosby Beach, England).

Talking about The Body series, Gormley says: ‘For me, drawing is a foundational activity, something that I do every day. In a sense it is a seedbed of and for ideas and feelings. The Body drawings attempt to render the body as a field and to feel the body not as a knowable object, but a subjective space of becoming.’

He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1997 and knighted in 2014.
