Isaac Julien

Onyx Cave (Stones Against Diamonds), 2015

Isaac Julien Onyx Cave

Isaac Julien is as acclaimed for his fluent, arresting films as his vibrant and inventive gallery installations. One of the objectives of his work is to break down the barriers that exist between different artistic disciplines. He draws from and comments on film, dance, photography, music, theatre, painting and sculpture, and unites them to construct a powerfully visual narrative.

Born in 1960, Julien lives and works in London. He has been making films and producing film installations for over 20 years, including Stones Against Diamonds (2015) from which this image is taken, PLAYTIME (2014), Ten Thousand Waves (2010) and Western Union: Small Boats (2007).

Julien has had solo exhibitions at institutions including MAC Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; MUAC (Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo), Mexico City; the De Pont Museum, Netherlands; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Art Institute of Chicago and The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. He is represented by the Victoria Miro Gallery.
