Julian Opie

Nurse, 2013

Julian Opie

Julian Opie is an English sculptor, painter, printmaker and installation artist. He studied at Goldsmiths College before emerging as an influential figure onto the British art scene in the 1980s.

The distinguishing feature of his visual language is a paring down of his subject matter to its essentials. In his works, Opie employs the aesthetics of simple graphic signs, logos and symbols familiar from public spaces, mass media and advertising. His inspirations and references include the art of ancient Egypt and Rome, Old Master paintings, Manga cartoons and Japanese woodblock prints.

Opie is an artist of contemporary life, confronting us with observations of normal everyday experiences. Reminding us to look at what is around us, he presents us with figures walking in the rain, tourists, passers-by at school gates and busy workers striding across the city.

Nurse is from a series of five walking figures entitled Walking in London 1.
