Magic Circle Variation, 2017
Goldsmiths’ graduate Rogan Brown’s intricate paper sculptures are inspired by the tradition of scientific illustration. His hand-cut works can take up to five months to produce having been created from layer upon layer of paper.
Brown was named Emerging Artist of the Year in the 2014 National Open Art competition and is famed for his detailed relief sculptures. These are based on patterns and motifs found in nature such as cells, insects and fossils.
Magic Circle is inspired by the hidden microbiological world that exists in every one of us and which is known as the human microbiome, a vast colony of bacteria and fungi that helps our bodies function in ways that science is only just beginning to understand.
The circle of the title references not only the petri dish and the microscope lens but also the Buddhist mandala, the circle that symbolises harmony. It is this microbiological harmony and beauty that the work encourages us to contemplate.
