Balancing Act & 'context image', 2011

Balancing Act, 2011

Slinkachu is a London-based artist known for creating miniature street art installations, which he then photographs.

The Little People Project started in 2006 and involves the remodelling and painting of miniature model train set characters, which are then placed, photographed and left on the street.

The installation in Balancing Act was left in Khayelitsha, a shanty town near Cape Town, South Africa. The work was created as part of Slinkachu’s 2012 book and show Global Model Village and comments on the difficulties associated with the availability of HIV antiretroviral drugs in South Africa.

A percentage of sales from the editions have gone to support Baphumelele Children's Home in Khayelitsha, which does amazing work helping children affected and orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Slinkachu says: ‘The street-based side of my work plays with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings.’
