Tom Hunter lives in east London and his work often explores his community and neighbourhood. In 1998 he won the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award for Woman Reading a Possession Order. This was a portrait of a young mother which closely referenced Vermeer's A Girl Reading a Letter by an Open Window, except that Hunter's subject was reading an eviction notice from the council.
In 2006 he became the only artist to have a solo photography show at the National Gallery for his series Living in Hell and Other Stories, which used headlines from the Hackney Gazette to re-stage scenes from art history.
He is currently exhibiting Searching For Ghosts at the V&A Museum of Childhood which presents a glimpse into social housing in east London.
