I volunteer as part of the Work Positive Programme, to gain up to date work experience.
I am placed with the Estates team at the Gray's Inn Road office, so my title is Estate Officer.
I’m on placement two days a week. One is spent with the Estates team doing building checks, repairs and stock, and the other day is on reception. This involves taking bookings for meetings rooms, issuing access cards and general reception work with lots of chatter on the phones.
I’ve volunteered since the beginning of October 2015. The programme began one month earlier.
Since the mid 1980s I have volunteered with, worked for and been a trustee of organisations involved with the HIV community. This has been across three countries: the USA (in Chicago), Sweden and now the UK.
I feel it’s good and worthwhile to give back to the organisations that have taken us to where we are today. I remember the early days, where there were hardly any services or support to be had, and it all started with volunteers and a burning desire for action.
The best part of volunteering is all the people you meet, from clients to colleagues. You also have access to services you might need whilst on training or placement. It’s a good opportunity to gain experience while learning and adding to your CV.
