I volunteer at the Men Only Tayside clinics in Dundee with Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland.
I volunteer at the clinics one or two times a month. The clinics are run in partnership between Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland and NHS Tayside and are open to all men who have sex with men looking to have a test, seeking help or in need of advice.
I was well trained and have learned more communication skills when volunteering. Some of the clients are often in a worried situation before coming in and I’m there to be a friendly face and someone to talk to, helping ensure they are relaxed and comfortable. These skills, I believe, are helpful not only for my volunteering but also my further career development.
I started to volunteer almost a year ago and the reason why I picked Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland is because the work it does is really valuable and is of great significance to our people and society. HIV is something which requires every one of us to stay aware and work together to slowdown and stop its spread, especially for groups which are more at risk.
By volunteering for Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland, I have learned so much knowledge of HIV and other STIs that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I enjoy the social interaction with other fellow volunteers, the staff and the nurses in the clinics.
