I volunteer as a Welfare Rights Adviser as a member of the Welfare Rights Team at the Brighton office, providing advice and assistance to clients who have issues around benefits.
In my role I mainly deal with Employment & Support Allowance (ESA) & Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit claims. I have been volunteering in this role since October 2015.
I chose to volunteer in this role because I am HIV+ and personally needed the assistance of the Welfare Rights Team a couple of years ago. It was while accessing this service that I looked into volunteering on the reception desk, as they had vacancies.
It was during the volunteering application process that it was suggested I volunteer to work with the Welfare Rights Team! Here I am 16 months later and still enjoying the role I carry out.
I am also now on a THT 6 month Work Positive Placement, which I am doing in my current positon. I volunteered as I had time to spare and I wanted to put some of that time to good use. I enjoy dealing with clients directly and assisting where I can.
For me volunteering at THT has been worthwhile, satisfying, challenging, rewarding and difficult at times, frustrating at others! Personally it has enabled me to re-find my confidence, self-belief and given me a more positive outlook. Above all else, I enjoy it!
