In 1980, Nigel Cox went on an extraordinary adventure that was to transform his life. This three-year voyage, the Transglobe Expedition led by Sir Randulph Fiennes, took him from the South Pole to the North Pole. It was whilst working as a Radio Officer on the expeditions support ship that Cox began to sketch in his free time, depicting the open wilderness of the terrain around him.

From the outset, his art was and still is dominated by an immense sense of space. Moving on from his landscape work to his current portraiture and figurative pieces, he continues to imbue each figurative painting with a feeling of unlimited openness.

Cox is an avid people watcher, capturing the essence of intimate solitude and private human moments. The abandonment of background detail focuses the viewer directly on the subject, with its rich photorealistic detail and lustrous light.

Cox’s paintings are minimalistic yet meticulously detailed and it’s the mystery of the hidden story within that draws you to look closer.

With thanks to Nigel Cox and Coates and Scarry.
