Questions about wills

The most common questions we get asked about giving to us in your will.

How do I change my will to include Terrence Higgins Trust?

The first thing to think about is what kind of gift you’d like to leave

Once you’ve decided, simply ask your solicitor to amend your will for you.

For most people, this only requires adding one extra page to your will, which is called a codicil. Feel free to download a codicil template, which you should complete with the help of your solicitor.

Do I need a solicitor?

There is no need for a will to be written or witnessed by a solicitor. However unless your will is straightforward, we strongly advise you to seek the assistance of a solicitor. This will ensure your will is valid and that your wishes are carried out.

Do I need specific information?

You will need to include our name in full – Terrence Higgins Trust – and you will also need our registered charity number: 288527 (SC039986 in Scotland).

Is this something just for wealthy people?

No! We’re grateful to everyone who chooses to include a gift to Terrence Higgins Trust in their will, whatever the amount.

You certainly don’t have to leave a lot – whatever you can afford can make a difference. If you choose to leave us a gift, we hope you’ll simply see it as your chance to remember a cause you care about.

Are there any tax benefits to leaving a gift in my will?

Gifts in wills are generally exempt from Inheritance Tax.

Anything you leave to Terrence Higgins Trust could help to lower the tax burden on your estate, so long as it's over the current Inheritance Tax threshold.

However, we always recommend discussing any possible tax benefits with your solicitor or financial adviser.

Should I tell Terrence Higgins Trust?

No, you don’t have to tell us.

If you do choose to leave a gift to Terrence Higgins Trust, we’d love to hear from you. First and foremost, we’d simply like to say thank you. We’d also like to let you know that we are here to answer any questions you may have or to help you in any way we can.

If you would like to let us know your plans, please get in touch.

In the future, as the number of people living with HIV continues to rise, we will need to offer financial support to even more people with HIV facing a crisis in their lives.' - Ola, Head of Terrence Higgins Trust's Hardship Fund
