HIV and STI testingThe only way to be certain about whether you have HIV is to have an HIV test. These can be done at different types of centre so it's important to choose one that suits you. | ![]() |
You might know your doctor (or GP) and feel comfortable with them testing you, but it's important to understand that your results will go on your medical records where certain insurance companies and mortgage providers will be able to see them.
One advantage of going to your GP for testing is the fact that if you happen to be seen by someone you know you could be there for anything - being seen at your local GUM is a little harder to explain.
If you're concerned about people finding out you've been tested at your GP you can ask the practice about the measures they take to safeguard confidentiality.
The results of any HIV test done at a private clinic won't go on your medical record. You'll have to pay for the test but you can make an appointment at a time that suits you and you'll get the results quickly.
Most private medical practices can arrange for a HIV test. You'll find many in your local directories. We've entered into a partnership with Better 2 Know private testing clinics - which means if you choose to use one of them some of the costs will go towards our fight to improve the nation's sexual health.
