Welfare benefits

Living with HIV (or any other long term sexual health problem, such as Hepatitis C) can mean that your health varies over time. Sometimes you find you're able to manage a busy career, whereas at other times you may have to reduce your workload.

During those times when your health affects your ability to work, the welfare benefits system is there to help you cope financially. And Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) can advise you about which benefits you're entitled to and how to manage the changes.

Common issues

Here are some of the more common welfare benefits problems we encounter:

  • How will I cope for money if I have to stop work because of my illness?
  • I've been unable to work because of illness but now feel I'm ready to return: what about my benefits and work?
  • Do I qualify to get Disability Living Allowance (DLA)?
  • I'd like to start a study course and want to know how it will affect my benefits.

If your circumstances bear no resemblance to these issues, don't worry. Our advisers at THT Direct are qualified to help and have encountered a wide range of problems.

Where do I start?

Before you make any decisions you might want to use THT to talk things through with: after all we've been supporting people for 20 years. There might be things you haven't thought of or ways that we can help that you don't know about. Remember, THT Direct is only a phone call or email away.
