NHS Quality Improvement ScotlandDeveloping standards for HIV services in Scotland

NHS Quality Improvement Scotland is about to start developing national standards for HIV services across Scotland that are delivered through the NHS and some voluntary organisations. They will cover Prevention, Recognition and Diagnosis, Treatment and Care.

It is crucial that we involve people affected by HIV in the standards development process therefore, we are planning to establish an Advocacy Group to work in partnership with the Project Group. We are very keen to hear from:

  • patients and/or service users affected by HIV
  • carers and/or family members affected by HIV

How you can be involved

If you would like to be involved in developing these standards, you can do so in a number of ways:

  • Join the Advocacy Group – give time to attend meetings/events to provide input – we will make support available to do this
  • Contact us – advise us of the issues that are important to you
  • Comment on the draft standards – provide comments on the first draft of the standards during the consultation phase
  • Be informed – simply receive information about the development of the standards.

Spaces are limited but should you require more information on the support we can offer or would like to discuss further with someone at NHS QIS, please get in touch with Karen. All communications will be treated in the strictest confidence!

Do you live with someone who has HIV?

We're looking for people like you to get involved in a drugs trial for a new drug that can stop HIV infection.

It is important to test this new drug on a balanced mix of the population before the study moves into the countries most affected by HIV/AIDS. We’re looking for volunteers from all walks of life but particularly people from the black community and women. This trial is to check that any of the drugs side-effects are understood and to find out how long the drug remains in your body. To join you must:

  • be between 18 and 50 years of age and HIV negative
  • be able to visit the centre 18 times over about 31 weeks
  • you will be paid only to cover the costs of  your travel time and inconvenience

Approval for this trial has been given by Oxford Research Ethics Committee. Your GP will be informed if you join the trial and it put's you at no risk of becoming HIV positive.
