The Pfizer UK Foundation has awarded £47,573 to support a ground-breaking new HIV testing clinic in Birmingham. Called Fastest, the initiative offers rapid HIV test results (within an hour) in an easy-to-access, safe and confidential community setting.
The clinic is open to anyone, but is particularly targeted at African communities. This is because they, like many people with HIV, can experience health inequalities which are closely linked to stigma, discrimination, ethnicity, poverty and geographical factors. The grant from the Pfizer UK Foundation will help to address the health inequalities that prevent many African people from accessing vital testing services.
The Pfizer UK Foundation invites applications for funding from community based projects that tackle health inequalities throughout the United Kingdom. Applications are assessed by the Pfizer UK Foundation Board, who awarded the grant to THT Fastest clinic in Birmingham because the project targeted a specific health inequality and would bring obvious benefit to a clearly identifiable group of people.
"It's been incredibly satisfying to have worked with Terrence Higgins Trust on its application to the Pfizer UK Foundation," says Dave Titcomb, Senior Manager, Pfizer. "I'm immensely proud to know that we have been able to help the charity and the local community in such an important area of health."
