How to applyVolunteering can be a challenging and rewarding experience. We'll help you choose the right role for you, give you skills training and support you every step of the way. | ![]() |
Our selection and training procedures vary slightly from centre to centre. Your local Volunteer Coordinator will be happy to give you details of the volunteer selection process in your area.
Once we have received your application form we will apply for references. We will then invite you to an informal interview.
An interview will give us the chance to find out a bit more about you. It's good for you too, as you’ll be able to ask any questions about issues you may be unsure about. As far as possible interviews are carried out by current volunteers.
Once you have passed the interview stage you will be offered a place on a volunteer training course.
For volunteers in our London centres, this is a two-day course held over a weekend at Lighthouse West London in Ladbroke Grove. This training is compulsory. During the course we aim to equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become a volunteer, and let you learn more about HIV and some of the many important related issues.
If you want to join the Community Support service, there is an additional skills training course that you will need to attend to provide you with specialist skills. The Community Support skills training is a two-day course held over a weekend at Lighthouse West London.
Training for our helpline, THT Direct, is held at Grays Inn Road and consists of five separate training components.
Once you have successfully completed your volunteer skills training and, if applicable, your Buddy or THT Direct training, you will now be ready to start your voluntary work with us.
