Health Promotion volunteer

Part of our work is to try and improve the nation's sexual health by preventing the spread of STIs in the first place. We do this by making resources, support and information available to people. We call this Health Promotion. Often it's targetted at the communities most at risk:-  gay men, African communities and young people. The work involves going out into the community and interacting with people to give them the resources to protect their own sexual health.

What will I be doing?

You could be up to all kinds of things with all kinds of people. The type of activities you could be involved with include:

• Assisting with open days, events and presentations
• Promoting HIV and STI testing
• Distributing Health Promotion resources
• Assisting with surveys and collation of statistical information
• Assisting with mailings and information updating
• Assisting with the production and distribution of information and promotional material

What skills will I need?

Although this role can be quite challenging we do provide full training and support to our volunteers. It's a good oppurtunity to develop skills. You'll need to have:

• Good communication and active listening skills
• Ability to speak to people in an open and supportive manner
• Ability to deliver services in a non-judgemental and non-discriminatory manner
• A commitment to setting and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
• A willingness to develop and maintain own knowledge of HIV and sexual health issues
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• A commitment to representing THT in a positive & constructive way
