Volunteer with us

Volunteers play a vital role in everything that we do. From helping to deliver front-line services to helping with admin, everyone who volunteers is valued beyond measure.

Reception volunteers

Our team of reception volunteers provides a welcoming, responsive, confidential and efficient service to people contacting THT's centres, either in person or by telephone. They do this in a way that reflects the environment and ethos of the charity, which is non-oppressive, respectful and committed to equality of opportunity.

Aims of the service

The overall aim of our reception volunteer team is to help cover the front reception desk and main switchboard in accordance with the charity's policies and procedures.

If you join our team you'll need to:

  • maintain confidentiality
  • greet and welcome all personal callers to our centres
  • respond efficiently to their requests and enquiries
  • hand out keys on request and make sure they are accounted for
  • help make sure that the reception and drop-in areas remain well-presented, welcoming and free from hazards.

Reception volunteers also need to be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including paid and unpaid staff and service users, some of whom may be agitated, angry or upset.

What the service provides

We provide:

  • a safe and welcoming environment
  • a calm and knowledgeable person to greet people respectfully, whether by phone or in person
  • clear concise information and directions
  • confidentiality.

What the service can’t provide

Our reception team does not provide:

  • help with developing social contacts
  • counselling or specialist advice
  • volunteers to accompany people to hospital or doctor’s appointments
  • help in increasing social activities.

How we support our reception volunteers

We provide all receptionists with training on the charity's polices and specialist training. You'll also get on-the-job training and supervision.
