Volunteer with us

Volunteers play a vital role in everything that we do. From helping to deliver front-line services to helping with admin, everyone who volunteers is valued beyond measure.

Street Outreach Service

The Street Outreach Service (SOS) delivers outreach health promotion services to class A drug users and female sex workers on the streets of Coventry.

What this means is talking to those people in the community and helping them to access more information and resources so that they can make more informed choices about their sexual health.

As a volunteer you'd be trained to work alongside paid staff talking to these people whose sexual health is at higher risk.

What will I be doing?

  • Supporting workers with outreach sessions; engaging clients in discussion; making referrals and distributing resources
  • Collecting & collating information regarding drug use among clients for statistical purposes
  • Maintaining an up to date knowledge of current issues, information and good practice relating to HIV, hepatitis, drug use and other STI prevention
  • Assisting with the production and distribution of promotional materials and displays for the project
  • Assisting with open days and promotional events

Skills you need

You'll need good communication and active listening skills, you'll need to be able to talk to people in an open and supportive manner. We need you to have the ability to deliver services in a non-judgemental and non-discriminatory manner, and be a team player too.

We need some commitment from you - to setting and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries, to maintaining confidentiality, to representing us in a positive and constructive way, and to assuring us that you can give your time over the next year (and hopefully longer). We work during office hours and sometimes at evenings and weekends.

Lastly we need you to be 18 or over and you will need to have a Criminal Record Check.

Benefits

We provide full training, reimbursement of out of pocket expenses, support and supervision. We can give you a reference, and this is a great opportunity to develop and update skills and gain new experiences. Last but not least it's a wonderful way to meet a great selection of new people.
