Every 70 minutes, somebody in the UK is diagnosed with HIV. Find out how you can help Terrence Higgins Trust to be there for them.

Why volunteer

If you feel that the work we do is important, if you would like to get involved and if you can give us your time, please volunteer. We need your help.

Time commitment

When people volunteer to help us at THT, we ask them to give varying amounts of time, depending on the role. This might be:

  • helping out for a couple of hours at fundraising events
  • supporting someone for a couple of hours in the evenings or at weekends
  • working a couple of days a week on reception.

Whatever time you have to spare and whenever you are available, contact your local centre to see whether there is a role that would suit you.

Previous experience

We give all volunteers training for the role that they have chosen, so it doesn't matter if you do not have any previous experience.

Background

We would like our volunteers to be representative of the group of people who use our services, and so we are particularly keen for people living with HIV, gay men and African people to get involved. However, we welcome everyone who wants to help and is willing to work with a range of people.

THT and me.

Russell Wharton

Name: Russell Wharton

Role: Training Support Volunteer

What does that mean?:`My role is to assist the Volunteer manager for THT Direct. I interview new prospective volunteers, facilitate their training and help to support them - so I am involved with volunteers from the very start of their time with THT Direct.'

Why THT?: `I first joined THT 15 years ago in 1992. I had friends who had been diagnosed with HIV and knew what they were going through. I knew that THT was helping people who were being stigmatised because of their status and so joined as a buddy (now known as community support volunteers). It was highly emotional work and after my diagnosis I moved into more office based areas of THT.'

`I decided I wanted to directly support those people whose lives were being affected by HIV and AIDS and so joined what was to become THT Direct, answering calls on the helpline. Two years ago I moved into my present role. I continue to believe that THT is at the forefront of care for those affected by HIV and sexual health, and in its positive policy towards its volunteers and whilst that continues, so shall I.'
