World AIDS Day - 1 December

Help us to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS, promote good sexual health and combat the prejudice and ignorance that still surround this illness.

HIV is everyone's business

What happened on World AIDS Day?

As usual, World AIDS Day 2007 was a fantastic opportunity for us to get the UK thinking about HIV and AIDS, but we couldn’t have achieved half as much without the help of thousands of amazing individuals and organisations, colleges and schools.

Schools

Hundreds of schools and colleges around the country held World AIDS Day events, selling red ribbons, leaving their uniforms at home and doing amazing things to raise awareness of HIV amongst young people. University students from all over the country joined us on 24 November for a chilly but hugely successful London Street Collection, raising £3,000 in a few short hours.

Celebrities

Meanwhile, wonderful THT corporate supporters MAC and Kiehl’s put their money where their mouths are on World AIDS Day - with a little help from a whole horde of celebrities.  THT's soap star celebrity supporters, including Anthony Cotton, Mathew Bose, Jennie McAlpine, Kym Ryder and Roxanne Pallet, worked their socks off at their local M∙A∙C counters, selling the M∙A∙C VIVA GLAM lipstick and lipgloss.

The lovely people at Kiehl’s held another brilliant ‘Shop for a Cause’ event in their two London stores on Friday 30th November,  again with some celebrity assistance from THT supporters such as Gail Porter, Gaby Roslin and Sarah Cawood. Kiehl’s World AIDS Day activites look set to raise £4000 for THT!

the world

  • 40 million people live with HIV/AIDS worldwide.
  • 12 million children have been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS.
  • There were 4.3 million new HIV infections in 2006 and 2.9 million AIDS-related deaths.

We're trying to change these facts, but to do it we need your support – so we can provide support for the people who depend on us.

HIV is everyone's business - so between us let's make the world a better place.

Gordon Brown's speech

Gordon Brown

In a special recorded message for World AIDS Day, Gordon Brown has announced that the Government have decided to increase by 20% the grant that is provided to local authorities to enable them to care for people affected by HIV and AIDS, an extra £17.6 million of new funding over the next three years.

This is especially good news as there have been doubts about whether the AIDS Support Grant would be maintained at all and this secures its future for at least the next three years. We’ve been campaigning on the issue for a while as part of our campaigning manifesto “25 things the Government can do…” and would like to thank everyone who helped support the campaign.
