The number of people being diagnosed with HIV in Europe continues to increase, especially those infected through heterosexual sex. The European HIV epidemic in this group is partly due to migrants from countries where a relatively high proportion of people have HIV and partly due to partners of injecting drug users.
Many people are unaware of their status and only receive a diagnosis once they become symptomatic or get pregnant.
In 2006 54% of new diagnoses of HIV in Western Europe were acquired through heterosexual contact. This represents a 19.5% increase in heterosexual transmissions since 2002.
53% of new diagnoses in Sweden were acquired heterosexually; whilst in Portugal 52%, France 38%, and Belgium 34% were acquired by heterosexual contact.
