About CHAPS

CHAPS is an England wide, collaborative programme of HIV health promotion for gay, bisexual and other homosexually active men, in conjunction with an integrated research and development programme. It has been commissioned, funded and contract managed by the Department of Health since 1996. The CHAPS programme of work is developed within a collaborative partnership of HIV health promoters.

The current CHAPS partnership consists of 15 different agencies, providing national partners (THT, NAM, GMFA) and regional partners (Trade, Yorkshire MESMAC, The Eddystone Trust, Healthy Gay Living, The Metro Centre and three branches of THT – East, South and Thames), plus national Evaluation and Development partners (Sigma Research at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine)

Campaigns

The programme delivers a range of interventions targeted at men who may have sex with men including mass media campaigns, group work, websites and small media written resources.

Sector development

The Sector Development programme is the strand of CHAPS work targeted at the sexual health workforce. It is tasked with enhancing the skills of professionals working in the sector by championing, developing and supporting HIV, sexual health and related sectors so that all have the capacity, skills and resources to provide effective services to MSM.

Annual conference

Every year the CHAPS partners meet for an annual conference.
