Criminal prosecutions for transmitting HIVIf you have HIV it's important to make sure that you have a clear picture of the law. | ![]() |
In December 2005, a 44 year old man from Devon was sentenced to three years and three months in jail for the reckless transmission of HIV to an 82-year old woman. No trial took place as he pleaded guilty.
This case was unusual because of the age of the woman involved and the nature of the relationship that the defendant had with her. News reports claimed that a sexual relationship had developed between them while he was trying to convince her to lend him money.
It was also reported that he was given a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prevented him from associating with people over the age of 60.
