A group of women talk around a table

Case study 1:
Discrimination and support in Yorkshire

As the support from family and friends disappears, find out how a new source of support comes from a THT men's group.

Case study 2:
Domestic violence and HIV

Attacked by her husband when she told him that she, too, had HIV, Serinda was disowned by both their families. After she was safely rehoused, THT's Hardship Fund helped her to furnish her house. Now she is slowly beginning to rebuild her life.

Case study 3:
Limited clinic access - hypothermia

A woman queuing for treatment at a clinic developed hypothermia while she waited... This marked the end of walk-in treatment at one clinic and the start of a phone booking service. But this has its own problems and doesn't stop the increasing numbers of people needing appointments.

Case study 4:
Limited clinic access - gonorrhoea

“Due to too many patients, we have closed the clinic early.” This sign stopped one person getting early treatment for a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and instead they ended up with an untreatable complication known as reactive arthritis. As the number of people with STIs rises and it gets harder to get treatment, this case won't be unusual.

Case study 5:
Living with HIV

A young heterosexual woman talks candidly about her feelings and future prospects after contracting HIV while in Africa.

Case study 6:
HIV discrimination at work

Discriminated against by his company and with no support from his union, Ben had to quit. Life is great now, but what happened to equality and respect?

Case study 7:
Homophobia and HIV

John is a young single gay man who lived in a small community in the North West. When his HIV diagnosis was given out, he was disowned by his family and friends and had to move away. THT's Hardship Fund helped, and now he is getting his life back together.

Case study 8:
Regional variations in HIV treatment

Moving back to live with his family meant a gruelling travelling schedule for George to get treatment. Eventually it was too much. Read his brother's moving account.
