Can you help the University of East London with a new research project looking at the past experiences of HIV positive gay men with sex education and mass media health promotion work?
At some time or another you've most likely seen a survey or questionnaire that asks a lot of questions about your sex life and behaviour. This is really important and continues to shape how health promotion services are made the most effective they can be.
This project is a little different in that it is interested in talking with gay men about their personal opinions and unique experiences ranging from their sex education at school to what they remember about HIV prevention work in their local areas, and takes the form of an hour-long interview, mainly led by the person being interviewed.
So far this has resulted in a huge amount of information and insight into how gay men interact with health promoters and what they personally think of the work taking place now. As many interviews as possible are needed to explore the sides of sexual health promotion that are missed by surveys that often just ask multiple-choice questions.
To take part you must be male, over 18, gay and HIV positive.
All of the interviews are anonymous although your approximate year of HIV infection, age and the area in which you grew up are usually discussed during the interview to give the project some context and see if there are differences in attitudes to HIV and sexual health across different areas.
The interview can take place anywhere that you’d feel most comfortable and your name is not used at any point in the interview discussion or the write-up. If you'd like any more information on the project, or if you are able to take part, please e-mail Scott at scottellis874@hotmail.com.
