Timed to coincide with England’s first ever National HIV Testing Week, new figures released today by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show there were 8,900 people living with HIV in the North West in 2011. A quarter of these people were undiagnosed and therefore at risk of serious health problems.
HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland is calling on people in Aberdeen to stand up against HIV-related stigma this World AIDS Day (1st December). The charity’s Stand Up, Stand Out campaign aims to raise funds for people living with HIV and banish the stigma that still exists around the condition today. It is also planning a number of local events in partnership with HIV charity Gay Men’s Health.
Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, will visit HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust’s centre in Bristol on Friday 30th November in an effort to encourage more local people to test for the virus. Mr Williams will meet staff from the charity and take a tour of the centre, which provides support and services for people living with HIV in the local area.

The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Peter Main, will join HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust at an event to mark World AIDS Day on 1st December. The event, which takes place at Broadmead Baptist Church from 6pm will see more than 100 people come together to remember people who have lost their lives to HIV, and support the charity’s Stand Up, Stand Out campaign, which aims to banish stigma around HIV this World AIDS Day.
