Make HIV testing easier

Woman using a home testing kit

Regulators in the U.S. have recently given the go-ahead to an over-the-counter HIV test. People will now be able to test themselves at home if that’s what they want.

In the UK, self-testing kits are still illegal. One in four people living with HIV still don’t know they have it. Increasing testing options will help to change this.

For various reasons some people are not using clinics. Some are already buying illegal test kits over the Internet that are often of poor quality and lack information and advice, including for people who get a positive result. Read our full policy briefing.

We want the UK Government to urgently look at the case for legalising HIV self-testing kits so that more people can get tested and so that the kits people use are properly regulated.

Please support us by emailing your MP now, asking them to call on the Department of Health to review the current ban.
