Red Ribbon Funds

Red Ribbon Funds

Losing someone we love, be it a child, a partner or a very dear friend, can be so difficult to bear. Sometimes people find it helps to do something positive and keep their memory alive by celebrating their life with a lasting tribute.

Over the years, many people have donated to Terrence Higgins Trust in memory of a loved one, so we set up Red Ribbon Funds. These are personalised, tribute funds and are a lovely way to gather friends and family together to share memories and photographs of your much-missed loved one, while at the same time supporting Terrence Higgins Trust in a truly special way.

You can even take your Red Ribbon Fund online and have your own special, dedicated page in honour of your loved one, where people can donate, write messages and light candles.

You are free to donate as little or as much as you choose, and we can help you to spread the word about your fund, or with ideas about fun and unusual ways to raise money.

The Steve Munro Red Ribbon Fund

Steve and his mum EvelynEvelyn Munro was one of the first people to set up a Red Ribbon Fund when her son, Steve, died. Evelyn and other family members support Steve’s Fund with monthly gifts by direct debit and it is so wonderful to see it grow. We are so grateful to Evelyn and all of Steve’s family and friends for choosing to keep his memory alive in this way.

Evelyn says: 'When Steve died, his sister, brothers and I decided to set up a Red Ribbon Fund in his memory. He had great respect for the Terrence Higgins Trust and had been involved with their work, so we felt this was what he would have wanted.'

The Michael Fittock Red Ribbon Fund

Michael FittockMichael Fittock very sadly passed away in 1993 at the age of just 28. His mother, Maureen, has been supporting Terrence Higgins Trust in Michael’s Memory since 1997 and recently she decided to put all of these donations into a Red Ribbon Fund. Maureen and other family members have continued to contribute to Michael’s Red Ribbon Fund and because the Fund is online, it has allowed Michael’s friends to easily donate and share memories - even those friends who live abroad.

It has been lovely to get to know Maureen and to hear so much about Michael. It’s so touching that Maureen honours Michael’s memory in this way and we really can't thank her, and everyone else who contributes, enough.

Growing your Fund

Women having a bake saleEach Red Ribbon Fund is very unique and how your grow yours is entirely up to you. Some people donate on special occasions and anniversaries and encourage their friends and family to do the same. Others donate regularly via direct debit and it becoming very common for people to do some fundraising.

Fundraising can take many forms and you and your friends and family can choose to take part in large organised events or even create your own fundraising events. Quite a lot of Red Ribbon Fund holders take part in sponsored runs, marathons and Terrence Higgins Trust’s annual Walk for Life. Find out more about events to get involved in.

Our wonderful Red Ribbon Fund holders have organised events, such as music evenings, parties, dinner parties, barbeques and afternoon tea. They ask friends and family to make small donations towards their loved one’s Red Ribbon Fund and these events are not only a great way to raise money but also to remember and celebrate the special person you have lost.

Corinne Hatwell has a Red Ribbon Fund in memory of her very close friend, Gordon Chelsworth. For World AIDS Day last year, she invited her friends and family to a coffee morning complete with Red Ribbon Fund cookies and cupcakes. It was a really yummy way to fundraise and a big success!

However you decide to grow your Fund, we will be there to support you as much as we can. If you would like to discuss any fundraising ideas or would like any more information about getting involved in fundraising events, please call Alfie Wright on 020 7812 1685 or email alfie.wright@tht.org.uk
