Types of counselling and support

Individuals

We offer counselling for individuals and couples and run group support sessions for gay and bisexual men.

If you would like to make an appointment for group, individual or couples counselling/support please call Shamal on 020 7812 1777 or email your contact details to counselling@tht.org.uk.

We will then invite you for a free initial appointment in which you talk about what is going on for you, determine which approach is most suitable to your needs at a time that works for you depending on availability.

You can pay for counselling and support sessions online with a credit card or debit card. Payments are handled by Paypal and sessions are by appointment only. Alternatively you can pay by cash or cheque in person when you come to the session.

Counselling for individuals

You may want to work on a specific problem for a few sessions or an ongoing issue for a longer time. Your issues might be:

  • Relationships
  • Feelings of anxiety and/or depression
  • Drug use
  • Addiction
  • Compulsive behaviour
  • Difficulties in your sex life
  • Questions around your sexuality
  • Coming out
  • HIV
  • Work problems
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Life and anything else….

Our therapists are counsellors, psychotherapists and counselling psychologists trained in different psychotherapeutic approaches, who are accredited/registered or working towards accreditation/registration with professional bodies (UKCP, BACP, BPS).

Payment

You need to pay at least one week in advance of your session. We offer a means-assessed service with a sliding scale depending upon your income. 

Lower income

If your income is £30,000 or less sessions cost £30:

Pay for 1 2 3 4 sessions

Middle income

If you have an income of between £30,000 and £40,000 then this cost rises to £40 a session:

Pay for 1 2 3 4 sessions

Higher income

If you have an income of over £40,000 then the cost per session is £50:

Counselling for couples

You may want to work on a specific problem for a few sessions or an ongoing issue for a longer time. Your issues might be:

  • The relationship
  • Communication
  • Relationships with other people, open or monogamous relationships
  • Drug use
  • Addiction
  • Compulsive behaviour
  • Difficulties with sex
  • Feelings of anxiety and/or depression
  • HIV in the relationship
  • One partner is out , the other is not
  • Work problems
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Life and anything else….

Our couple therapists have undertaken specific couples work training and understand the particular issues and differences that face same sex couples. We are counsellors, psychotherapists and counselling psychologists trained in different psychotherapeutic approaches who are accredited/registered or working towards accreditation/registration with professional bodies (UKCP, BACP, BPS).

Payment

You need to pay at least one week in advance of your session. We offer a means-assessed service with a sliding scale depending upon your income. 

If you'd like to come with your partner then each session costs £50 per couple:

Groups

We have several types of groups available.

Are you losing control 1

This group is for people questioning their use of drugs, alcohol, sex, Chemsex, or any other compulsive behaviour. Service users are facilitated in making informed choices. Some may want help to examine their relationship with drugs, alcohol and sex whilst others may want to attend our groups alongside 12 Step programs such as NA, AA, CMA or SAA / SLA, and are trying to maintain abstinence. The group format includes:

  • Motivating change
  • Understanding triggers & cravings
  • Identifying risk taking behaviours
  • Mental health issues
  • Relapse prevention strategies
  • Emotional regulation

Are you losing control 2

This group is for people who have already attended Are you losing control 1 or have undergone a significant process of recovery through 12 Step groups or personal therapy, and are ready to start to work on deeper level issues. This is an abstinence based recovery group where members will be asked to commit to abstinence for the duration of the group. The group format includes:

  • Defining problematic behaviours, and committing to abstinence for the duration of the group (eight weeks).
  • Emotional regulation (under regulation / over regulation).
  • Understand healthy relationship boundaries, and issues around co-dependence.
  • Unconscious resistance to change.
  • Attachment perspectives on behaviour control.
  • Self-soothing to help with anxiety.
  • Mindfulness meditation.

You need to pay at least one week in advance of your session. We offer a means-assessed service with a sliding scale depending upon your income.

Are you losing control? groups 1 and 2

Are you losing control? groups have to be paid in advance and the cost for the 8 week course is determined by your income. Each session runs for 2.5 hours.

If your income is over £25,000, the course costs £160.
