Aims to empower and improve the welfare of marginalised and disadvantaged African communities in the UK and overseas. Through a number of community initiatives, supports individuals and families in overcoming poverty, ill health, social injustices etc. and in maximising their life opportunities. Promotes access and participation in the uptake and delivery of health, education and other social welfare services through the provision of resources, information, advice, training and support. Aims to help communities build sustainable livelihoods by supporting self-help initiatives and campaigns, providing resources, advice, training and fundraising for community projects as well as sharing good practice with other agencies.
AAF in partnership with six other community organisations in London was commissioned by Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham PCTs to provide HIV awareness and prevention services for African communities. AAF specifically targets at-risk groups within various faith settings and African regional groupings including young people, francophone and Horn of Africa communities. Activities include small group work, advisory services, training volunteers, condom distribution and one-to-one support as well as promotion of access to voluntary HIV counselling and testing. Activities run daily including weekend workshops and outreach events.
Supports the African elderly to overcome isolation and disadvantage through organised group walks, IT training, healthy eating days and social evenings. Beneficiaries also access a range of exciting volunteering opportunities enabling them to stay active and share experiences.
AAF Pamoja volunteers' training programme equips volunteers with effective outreach and advocacy skills enabling them to initiate outreach activities and promote positive user involvement aimed at building self-confidence and promoting choice. Accredited by ASDAN and now leads to a Certificate in Community Volunteering award. Training sessions run twice a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Works in partnership with a number of Islamic faith and cultural centres to actively engage African Muslim communities in HIV awareness and prevention efforts as well as promoting access to sexual health services within their communities. Activities include health workshops, support groups, training sessions, outreach, advice and voluntary HIV testing and counselling.
