When award-winning TV journalist Sorious Samura wanted to visit Cote d’Ivoire to investigate what it’s like to be gay in Africa, he was stopped by the authorities there. “Don’t come. There are no gays here!”, they told him.
Samora did visit east and central Africa for his critically acclaimed documentary, ‘Africa’s Last Taboo’, which was screened on Channel 4 a few months ago. In this issue, he shares with readers his shock at the level of hatred and violence towards gay men in Africa (see ‘Your Shout’ on page 1). He says that, whether on the continent or in the Diaspora, Africans need to accept that people who are gay have every right to live as equal members of the society.
Also in this issue, we interview Pastor Gideon Byamugisha, the award-winning AIDS campaigner who was the first African religious leader to openly declare his HIV status.
