Terrence Higgins Trust has been working with schools for a number of years to raise awareness of HIV/Sexual Health and LGBT issues.

This work has included the development of lesson plans and training for teachers to ensure they are providing students with relevant and clear information.

'Out in School' is a key example of how Terrence Higgins Trust is working alongside teachers to make LGBT issues a key part of the curriculum. This resource pack has been written for teachers by teachers and offers lesson plans and ideas for key Stage 4 pupils to gain a better understanding of diversity and sexuality.

Areas of the curriculum covered include geography, English literature and language, and religious education. Also included is a powerpoint presentation to be used in assembly.

The rewriting history cd has been developed by youth workers, teachers and young people to offer teachers a different tool to educate students on the history of LGBT sexuality. The units of this resource are overlapping and there are a number of ways to approach the themes.

For instance, rather than a separate unit on media, there are activities addressing the media throughout the units. Each unit contains different sections. In the pdf you will find the main issues for each section outlined, with suggested activities and exercises. The appendices pdf contains photos, quotes and all other supporting material for the suggested activities. Of course, you can also use this material in a number of ways.

This resource has been developed to be a cross-curricular. Rather than having an 'LGBT History Lesson' this resource can be used in a range of subjects, including citizenship, PSHE, English, history, media, drama, art, ICT etc.

Terrence Higgins Trust is committed to raising awareness of HIV/sexual health for young people. We can provide teachers with lesson plans, training or speakers to visit your school and have an open discussion with pupils.
