Before Easter, the Government announced an independent study exploring a framework for compensation for the survivors of the Contaminated Blood Scandal. At least 1,243 people in the UK, mainly haemophiliacs, were infected with HIV as a result of contaminated blood products administered by the NHS in the 1980s. Sir Robert Francis QC has been appointed to undertake the study.

We've written to Sir Robert setting out our expectations. We believe all the original Macfarlane community should be considered for compensation – without exception; that there should be space for a distinct voice for those living with HIV; that funding for legal support should be provided to 'core participants' throughout his study; and compensation has to be more than financial, for example, access to the best possible healthcare.
