The HIV Research Trust was founded in 2002 to provide financial support to early-mid career physicians, nurses, scientists, and other healthcare professionals who are based in resource limited settings and work in the field of HIV infection.

Scholarships are awarded competitively following a peer-review process on an annual basis.

Scholarships should enable recipients to acquire new skills, develop their career, and bring vital research back to their home institution, adding capacity to their department.

Funding is provided largely by the HIV Drug Therapy Glasgow Congress, as well as large contributions form ViiV Healthcare, the Joep Lange institute and others.

The HIV Research Trust is governed by a board of trustees based around the world. In 2021, the HIV Research trust became a subsidiary of Terrence Higgins Trust.
