Can I choose my counsellor

Once you have filled out your application form you will be placed with a counsellor who we feel best meets your needs. If you have specific needs, (e.g. would like to see someone specialising in chemsex or gender issues) please make sure to tell us in your application form and we will do our best to accommodate this.

What if I don’t like my counsellor?

The relationship between client and counsellor is very important. We do our best to place you with the best counsellor for your needs but if you struggle to relate, please contact us and we will try to place you with a new counsellor as soon as possible.

Will I see my counsellor at the same time every week?

Yes you will. If you need to vary times to accommodate work patterns, please let us know in your application or get in touch with the service and we will do our best to meet your needs.

Do you have any evening sessions available?

Yes, our last session starts at 7pm and lasts 50 minutes. Please note that evening slots are not available for people receiving free counselling.

Do you offer weekend sessions?

We are currently unable to offer counselling at the weekend.

What if I can’t attend?

Providing you give at least 48 hours notice you can cancel your counselling sessions and you will be refunded any money paid in advance.

Is your service confidential?

Terrence Higgins Trust Counselling is confidential, following the guidelines set out in applicable legislation (Data Protection Act 2018), and in Terrence Higgins Trust’s own Confidentiality Policy. This means Terrence Higgins Trust will not make known or share outside of the organisation any personally identifiable information about you using our service, or the information you choose to disclose. If circumstances arise where Terrence Higgins Trust considers in good faith that information about you should be disclosed to a third party, Terrence Higgins Trust will discuss this with you and will seek your consent first, but without being obliged to obtain your consent. Such a circumstance may include a concern that you or another person are at serious risk of harm.

I want to do online counselling but have never used Zoom before. Can you help with this?

We will email you very clear instructions before your first counselling appointment. If you need further support please email [email protected]  and we will arrange to talk you through this over the phone. You will need a computer or smartphone / tablet, a good broadband connection and a private space to talk.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend entirely on what you want to get from counselling. Most of our clients have between 6-12 sessions but we can offer up to 24 sessions per year for paying clients and up to 12 sessions per year for those who are receiving counselling free of charge.

Do you keep information about me?

Text

We keep as little information as possible - just enough to manage our services with you. This is held securely in accordance with GDPR.
